Wilton Littlechild
Willie Littlechild has exemplified tremendous leadership throughout his career as an accomplished lawyer, respected politician and exceptional athlete. He has worked tirelessly to promote human rights, in particular those of Indigenous peoples.
Wilton Littlechild was born on April 1, 1944 on the Ermineskin reserve, Maskwacîs (formerly known as Hobbema). He comes from a large family with seven sisters and four brothers. He is honoured to have been raised by his grandparents, Chief Dan Minde and Mary Jane Minde and his philosophy for life can be accredited to them. His grandfather taught him from a cultural and traditional perspective, while his grandmother instructed him to pursue a formal education.
Chief Littlechild is a respected lawyer, advocating for the rights of Indigenous Peoples, most recently as a Commissioner with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada and as a Member of the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.  Dr. Littlechild has won more than seventy sports championships, and has received numerous awards, including the Indspire Award for Law and Justice.

Doreen Manuel is the camera operator, editor and owner of this video. With her permission we bring you Arthur Manuel.
Please share this important knowledge as it is a work in progress as is the future of Canada. We Thank Her for allowing us to bring it to the people.
We would like to, with Honour, give Respect to the Family & Friends in Prayer for their Loss.  The Great Spirit has taken him for Council. The future is Good.
Thank you very much

Grand Chief Dr. George Manuel

Doreen Manuel

Doreen is the sixth child of Grand Chief Dr. George Manuel and Marceline Manuel. Doreen is a graduate of the Aboriginal Film and Television Diploma Program (AFTP) at Capilano University. She has an extensive background working in First Nations education and community development in both rural and urban centers. Doreen comes from a long line of oral historians and factual storytellers from her First Nations traditional background. She has experience directing for television and as the Canadian Correspondent for the Native Heartbeat and Northwest Indian News both USA Native American TV news magazine programs; she is the owner operator of Running Wolf Productions; and the Program Coordinator for the Indigenous Independent Digital Film making program at Capilano University. She is the recipient of the Governor General of Canada Medal Award for academic excellence for her studies in AFTP; and Women in Film & Television, Leadership in Education Award.
Doreen has been tanning hides and creating leatherwork and beadwork for 38 years. Traditionally trained by her Ktunaxa grandmother Mary Paul and mother Marceline Manuel, Doreen enjoys taking on exciting, challenging projects. Lately she has been beading solid beaded converse running shoes with her intricate designs. Doreen works with size 10 to 22 beads, she really enjoys working with the smaller size 22 in order to add extraordinary detail to her creations. She thinks of beading like painting as she manipulates the direction of the bead in order to create three dimensional imagery. Doreen has evolved into an exceptional artist and continues to learn and experiment while she trains her children in traditional First Nations art.

NOW IS THE TIME TO

TURN RECOGNITION

INTO ACTION

94 Calls to Action

Action #45... We call upon the Government of Canada, on behalf of all Canadians, to jointly develop with Aboriginal peoples a Royal Proclamation of Reconciliation to be issued by the Crown. The proclamation would build on the Royal Proclamation of 1763 and the Treaty of Niagara of 1764, and reaffirm the nation-to-nation relationship between Aboriginal peoples and the Crown. The proclamation would include, but not be limited to, the following commitments …

The idea that Canada was founded by the British and French, is incomplete.

Indigenous people were here long before both and should be recognized as at least equal founders of the nation.

During this year's Canada 150 activities, now is the time to turn recognition into action.

N’we Jinan Offers A Dynamic Approach To Music Education

Participants learn about sound recording, music production, songwriting, voice and performance. Within the studios’ residency, original songs are created containing messages that focus on cultural identity, language, struggle, love and self acceptance. The tour also gives participating youth an opportunity to create a music video to support the songs they’ve created. This process allows youth to emerge even more out of their shells and gives space for collaborating, teamwork, encouragement, confidence building and community empowerment.

The N’we Jinan Tour Is A Music Initiative that brings a mobile recording studio and a video production team into schools and youth centers across First Nation and Native American communities. The program offers youth the chance to create an original song and music video that explores relevant issues and topics while promoting positive messaging, community engagement and collective voice.

As part of the N’we Jinan tour, workshops leaders have been taking mobile music studios directly to schools and youth centers to teach songwriting, recording, audio and video production, and live performance to youth groups since 2014.

This video from the ‘Na Aksa Gyilak'yoo School in Kitsumkalum First Nation, British Columbia, tells the story of the Highway 16 or the “Highway of Tears,” a stretch of road in Western Canada where  young women, mostly indigenous, have disappeared or have been murdered.
The cases mostly remain unsolved.
Song written, recorded and filmed with students of 'Na Aksa Gyilak'yoo School in Kitsumkalum First Nation, British Columbia.

First Nations language fluency among the youth that participate, many of the song titles are in the native language. In this song recorded in Whapmagoostui Cree First Nation, the song's chorus is sung in the Cree language. The young people involved received some help from Gary Jolly from the Northstars hip-hip group, who lent them a verse in Eastern James Bay Cree.

Sometimes I feel like no ever cares about me,
but I’m still going to try to continue to walk my days on earth
this is the day you’ll hear our scream,
cause we lost our way in life as youth
but I believe that one day we will rise
I don’t want to see them live a bad life
so they can grow and lead our youth as well
so they can do as the creator destined them to

The QUO

“People have been telling our stories of resistance from a colonial perspective for hundreds of years now and I think it’s important for us to take back the narrative.” Anishinaabe activist Sarain...
Of Anishinabe lineage, Sarain is a passionate spokesperson for her aboriginal community north of Toronto and wears the beauty of her heritage with pride. Sarain explains that, “through film and acting my goal is to tell the stories that allow us to relearn our self’s as aboriginal people.” Through her pursuit of recognition as a name in the film industry, Sarain hopes to open new doors and opportunities for Aboriginal youths.
Already well on her way, Sarain has worked on several major projects: she was cast as Sacheen Little Feather in "The Andy Warhol Interview Project" which debuted at the Vienna Film Festival in June 2007 and was involved in the ARG re-release of the CBS TV drama “Jericho”. Of course, she always has lots of new ideas on the drawing board and is currently refining several concepts for projects in the near future.
Already in progress are various independent endeavors including the debut of her first play entitled “Ashes” which appeared at the Weesageechak Festival in Toronto and most recently; Sarain completed The New York Film Academy’s, acting for film program.
Just as comfortable behind the scenes as in front of the lens, Sarain is also a distinguished fashion model. She can be seen on the front cover of PIE, Redskin and Spirit magazines, and has also appeared in ImagoZine, Butterfly Unltd. from NYC and Grind magazine. Sarain has modeled in several Imago shows and also for designer Brandon R. Dwyer of Project Runway.
Sarain is strong and nimble not only as an intellect; she has also been studying, practicing and performing as a professional dancer for the past ten years.
She has attended the Canadian Children's Dance Theatre, the Quinte Ballet School and the Alvin Ailey Bachelor of Fine Arts Program in New York City.
She has performed at The Canada Dance Festival 2008, The Barrie Jazz And Blues Festival VIII, the 2002, 2007 and 2012 Aboriginal Achievement Awards, and two summers with the Ajkun Ballet Theatre Company in New York City.
She is a member of Kahawaii Dance theatre and has attended three indigenous dance residencies at The Banff Centre, witch allowed her to work with Neil Iremia of Black Grace and Javier Dezule of Dezule dance.
Sarain is currently the newest member of Untitled Collective; a NYC based Australian aboriginal modern dance collective. On and off the dance floor, this stellar entity of artistic expulsion is truly always on her toes.
